Daily and twice weekly doses of 50 mg iron tablets were compared on 76 pregnant women in this two-month experimental study. The results showed that hemoglobin, hematocrit and RBC values had significantly increased at the end of the experiment, in both groups. Mean serum iron had significantly increased in the daily dose group but not in the intermittent dose group.Although mean serum zinc level had decreased in both groups but it was significantly more pronounced in the daily dose group(P < 0.03) pointing to the beneficial effect of intermittent dosing. Therefore it is concluded that the twice weekly doses of iron supplement can be as effective as daily doses in preventing anemia among pregnant women with less negative effects on other parameters.
